Philip Burguieres and John Sawhill Elected to Board of Directors of Newfield

HOUSTON, May 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Newfield Exploration Company (NYSE: NFX) today announced that Philip J. Burguieres and John C. Sawhill were elected to the board of directors at its May 7, 1998 Annual Meeting of Stockholders, replacing Dale E. Zand, 71, who retired, and Jeffrey A. Harris, 42, who did not stand for re-election.

Philip Burguieres, 54, is Chairman of the Board of Weatherford Enterra, Inc. Before joining Weatherford, Mr. Burguieres was Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Panhandle Eastern Corporation and was previously with Cameron Iron Works, Inc. in various capacities. He currently serves on the board of directors of Chase Bank of Texas, N.A., Cogen Technologies Energy Group, Denali Incorporated, Hydril Company and McDermott International, Inc., The Council of Overseers to the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School at Rice University, and the advisory board of the Sam Houston Area Council of Boy Scouts.

John C. Sawhill, 61, is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Nature Conservancy and also a director of The Procter and Gamble Company, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, NACCO Industries, the Vanguard Group of Mutual Funds and the Member Advisory Board of British Petroleum. Before joining the Nature Conservancy, he served as a director of McKenzie and Company, Inc. which involved a variety of energy assignments for governmental agencies in the United States, Europe and Latin America. Mr. Sawhill also served as Deputy Secretary of the Department of Energy and other energy related administrative positions under Presidents Carter, Nixon and Ford and was also President of New York University.

Newfield explores, develops and acquires oil and gas properties principally in the Gulf of Mexico.
